7digital What we said: Billed by Hurts-singer Theo Hutchcraft as “the beginning of a bold odyssey”, Surrender’s lead single, ‘Some Kind Of Heaven’, represented a significant stride away from the monochrome melancholia of 2013’s Exile. The rest of the record upholds this theory, thanks in part to production work from Stuart Price and Ariel Rechtshaid, and to an increased focus on euphoric choruses, which also help temper the frequently lovelorn subject matter. There are surprises too, most notably in the EDM influence powering ‘Nothing Will Be Bigger Than Us’ and the funk-flecked feel of ‘Lights’. Whether long-time fans will relish these specific developments remains to be seen, but you can’t knock the duo for dreaming big.
