7digital What we said: Lauded as the saviours of indie by all and sundry last year, it’s fair to say The Drums’ eponymous debut went down a storm. Still, we’re in “difficult second album” territory now, and the view from that vertiginous pedestal has already proved enough to spook guitarist Adam Kessler, who caused a serious wobble to the band dynamic by departing at the end of 2010. Now, we mean no slight on Kessler when we say this but, were it not for recent interviews, we’d have no clue Portamento was the product of a leaner line-up: there’s more than enough infectious surf-pop here to suggest they’re safe from career wipe out.
